A VISIONARY LEADER FOR MELBOURNE'S FUTURE

In the vibrant city of Melbourne, Florida, a new political figure is emerging, one whose roots and commitment to community service run deep.  Dr. Hazel Buggs, a lifelong advocate for social justice, community development and education announces her candidacy for Mayor of Melbourne, bringing with her a wealth of experience and a clear vision for a better Melbourne.

From Humble Beginnings to Community Pillar

Born in Eastman, Georgia to a Sharecropper and the ninth of fourteen siblings, Dr. Buggs' journey is a testament to resilience and dedication.  After graduating from Peabody High School in 1970, she relocated to Melbourne, Florida, later married and moved to Massachusetts where her two daughters were born and her community service began.

Leadership and Advocacy in Boston

Dr. Buggs' professional career in Boston set the stage for her lifelong dedication to community service.  She served as Office Manager of a special project for the City of Boston and Office Manager for the Boston Branch NAACP, where she played a pivotal role in managing operations and advocating for civil rights.  She later was elected as an officer to that board.

Upon employment with Northeastern University, she served as Supervisor of the clerical staff in the College of Business and also worked on a six month project called the Boston Conference, co-sponsored by the Boston Globe Newspaper and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, showcasing her ability to lead large scale initiatives.

Education

Her educational pursuits took her to Northeastern University, Brevard Community College and Lighthouse Bible College, where she earned a Bachelor's in Christian Education and a Master of Theology, culminating in an Honorary Doctorate of Divinity for her contributions to ministry and community service.  She also has a Real Estate License and is an Etiquette Consultant.

A Return to Melbourne:  Building Community and Inspiring Change

In 1984, after her mother's passing, Dr. Buggs returned to Melbourne, where she continued her mission of community service.  She married the late Rev. Jesse E. Buggs, Sr., and over the next 35 years, she became a pillar of the Melbourne community.  She organized Melbourne's first Peace March in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., drawing over 5,000 participants throughout Brevard County, co-produced and hosted the influential talk show, "Voice and Conscience", a collaborative effort between Brevard Community College and the Melbourne NAACP Branch and eventually produced her own hourly gospel program.  Her entrepreneurial spirit led her to establish the Sister to Sister Unique International Boutique, further demonstrating her commitment to economic development.  Dr. Buggs recently retired from Brevard Public Schools after over 15 years of service as a Substitute Teacher.

Dr. Buggs, if elected, will become the first African American Mayor in the history of Melbourne.
